More Ways On How Social Media May Effect Education

To bring in both aspects of the argument, education in the future may not be as wonderful a picture as I was initially painting. With the expansion of social media, information is becoming more readily available to students across the planet, however having information so being so easily accessible in a variety of online delivery methods (ex. textbook definitions, videos, scholarly journals, friends etc) may reduce the need  for a student to legitimately learn the material as the information/concept may be easily access if he may need to refer to it again.

Social media also undoubtedly brings about many distractions to the student, as he may attempt to "multi task" while completing an assignment. Many students believe that they are able to perform multiple tasks at once with great success, although these students do complete the work, they fail to do so with as much success if they had done the assignment without multi-tasking. If social media is to be more used in education, the prevalence of "muti-tasking" will become greater, reducing the work quality of the students and also their ability to learn.

There are much more ways that increasing the use of social media will negatively effect the education  of students, however with how easy things are becoming with the use of this technology, there is little in the way of stopping it.

  1. I do agree with you Kevin. Social media is a huge distraction to students. Sometimes while doing assignments I hear my phone beep is either a text message or a BBM. Curious to know I take a look at my phone and tempted to respond to messages, this takes me out of my assignment and unknowingly I spend over 20minutes responding back and forth to the message. Same while doing assignments online, I find myself trying to search Facebook for latest updates or even Google checking for topics entirely different from my assignment. I see this as multi-tasking but in the real sense is a distraction. I would conclude by saying that social media affects education in a negative way.
