Future of Social Media in Nursing

Being enrolled in Sheridan's Practical Nursing Program and having realised the benefit that social media can bring, I was eager to find research based on what I had been thinking. The article Social Media Use in Nursing Education by Schmitt, et al, brings to light the increasing use of social media by nursing educators and some of the problems that they face. More interestingly, the authors show that facilities that teach nursing are already making headway in preparing nurses for practice in a more technologically advanced field. The article also goes on to state that sites such as the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario have released a series of best practice guidelines that are much more mobile-friendly for those who wish to use their guides while on the job. The authors also acknowledge that social media brings forth the opportunity  for collaboration, networking, and learning that was not previously available. Throughout the article, the authors bring up instances where many educational facilities are already in the process of designed a more social media involved education system, and also hospitals who are in the process of laxing privacy policies to allow for the easier use of social media while on the job. This fortunately means that better quality care and, a much more technologically advanced healthcare education and patient education systems will soon be in place!
